How Heat Pumps Work

An air source heat pump is a renewable heating system that extracts heat from the air outside and transfers it into your home to provide heating and hot water via radiators and underfloor heating systems. Unlike traditional boilers that burn fuel, air-source heat pumps move existing heat, making them far more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly – even in colder weather. Ground-source heat pumps work on the same principle, drawing heat from the ground instead of the air, but we currently specialise in air-source and hybrid systems.

How Much Does a Heat Pump Cost?

Average Installation Cost: £8,000 - £14,000

Government Grant Available: Claim up to £7,5000 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

VAT-Free Installation: There’s no VAT to pay on your heat pump system or installation

The total cost depends on your property and system size. Typically, this includes:

  • The heat pump unit itself – usually the largest portion of the cost
  • Installation and labour – including any plumbing or electrical work.
  • Hot water cylinder and accessories – if required.
  • Controls and commissioning – ensuring everything runs efficiently
  • Aftercare and servicing – for long-term performance

At City Warmth, we are always working hard to keep our heat pump prices as affordable as possible. We’ll tailor your quote to your property, outlining everything that’s included in the heat pump cost so that you can understand what you’re getting for your money. If you have any questions, or you want support applying for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, give us a call. We’re happy to help.

Air-Source Heat Pumps

Air-source heat pumps draw heat from the air outside your home and transfer it into your central heating system to provide heating and hot water. When installed correctly, they can deliver impressive efficiency, producing more energy than they consume. Our experienced team ensures every system is precisely fitted and configured to maximise performance, comfort and savings.

Air source heat pumps are highly efficient for most modern and well-insulated homes. For older properties or homes with limited outdoor space, they may not always be the ideal solution – get in touch and we’ll recommend the best system for your property.

Hybrid Heat Pumps

Hybrid heat pumps, also known as dual energy systems, combine an air-source heat pump with your existing gas boiler. The system automatically chooses the most energy-efficient heat source based on outdoor temperatures, helping you cut costs while maintaining consistent warmth. In many cases, we can integrate your current boiler into the setup, reducing installation expenses and disruption.

At City Warmth, we’re experts at aligning the heating and hot water needs of your home with the right heat pump system, so that you can enjoy comfortable temperatures and lower energy bills all year long.

FAQs

Here are some of the most common questions we get from homeowners across Sussex about hybrid and air source heat pumps.

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an energy-efficient heating system that turns the air from outside into heating and hot water in your home. Instead of burning fuels, like traditional gas or oil boilers, heat pumps simply move existing heat. This makes them a far more sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective way to heat your home.

Are Heat Pumps Worth It?

Yes, heat pumps are absolutely worth it. They can significantly reduce your energy bills, lower your carbon footprint, and provide comfortable internal temperatures all year round. What’s more, with government grants of up to £7,500 and VAT-free installation, the long-term savings make heat pumps an excellent investment.

Heat Pump vs Boilers: Which is Better?

While traditional gas and oil boilers generate heat by burning fuel, heat pumps work by transferring natural heat from the air into your home. This makes them far more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, not to mention cost-efficient.

Do Heat Pumps Work in Cold Weather?

Yes. Modern air source heat pumps are designed to work efficiently even in cold conditions. They extract heat from the air and use advanced refrigerant technology to maintain reliable warmth, even during the coldest British winters.

Do Heat Pumps Work with Radiators?

Yes, air source heat pumps can work with both existing radiators and underfloor heating systems. In some cases, larger or upgraded radiators may be recommended to improve heat pump efficiency. However, our engineers will assess your existing heating system and provide tailored advice to ensure the best results for your home.

Are Air Source Heat Pumps Noisy?

No, air-source heat pumps are not noisy. They are very quiet, typically producing a gentle hum similar to a refrigerator. Most homeowners hardly notice any noise disturbance at all. At City Warmth, our heat pump installers will thoughtfully position and fit each system to minimise sound, ensuring your peace of mind.
