Your boiler is one of the most important items in your home. It keeps you warm and comfortable all year round and means you can have hot water whenever you need it. However, boilers degrade as they get older, becoming less reliable and more expensive to run. As such, it’s important you know how old your boiler is so you can maintain a comfortable home and lower energy bills.

So, how old is your boiler? Well, here’s how to find out!

How Can I Tell How Old My Boiler is?

The easiest way to find out the age of your boiler system is by looking at its serial number. Every boiler model has a serial number that is visible somewhere on the outside of the boiler - either in the drop-down panel, on the side, or underneath. You will recognise the serial number because it looks like a long barcode and includes a series of numbers and letters.

To find out the age of your boiler from the serial number, go to the 3rd and 4th number in the code. This will tell you the year the boiler was manufactured. For example, if the 3rd and 4th number is 2 and 0, this means your boiler was manufactured in 2020.

If you can’t find a serial number that is visible on the outside of your boiler, it’s always worth checking your boiler’s installation manual as it should be in there.

Finding Out Your Boiler’s Age by Manufacturer

Depending on who your boiler was manufactured by, the rules for finding out the age of your boiler may vary. Don’t worry though, we’re here to help. Our experts share how you can check the age of your boiler by manufacturer.

How Old is My Vaillant Boiler?

Finding out how old your Vaillant boiler is couldn’t be simpler. The process is just the same as we shared above. Simply look for the serial number on the outside of your Vaillant boiler. The 3rd and 4th numbers will indicate the year your boiler was manufactured. Once you know this, you know how old your Vaillant boiler is.

How Old is My Baxi Boiler?

The serial number on a Baxi boiler will provide insight into the age of your boiler. You can typically find the serial number by opening the drop-down panel on the front of your boiler. If your Baxi boiler was manufactured before 2003, the 4th and 5th digits of the serial number will represent the year of manufacture, while the 6th and 7th digits will represent the week.

However, if your Baxi boiler was manufactured after 2003, you will need to contact Baxi customer service and provide them with the serial number. They can then let you know the date of manufacture.

How Old is My Worcester Bosch Boiler?

Finding out the age of your Worcester Bosch boiler is a little more tricky. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the serial number can be harder to find on a Worcester Bosch boiler and secondly, the serial number is specifically designed for internal use only.

This means the serial number on your Worcester Bosch boiler can only be read by a professional, as they have FD numbers with production dates coded in. So, to find out how old your Worcester boiler is, you need to contact Worcester customer support.

How Old is My Ideal Boiler?

You can find out the age of your Ideal boiler by checking the Benchmark certificate. This can be found in your boiler installation manual. You may also be able to find out how old your boiler is by checking the serial number. This is typically found at the bottom of the boiler system.

Here are some of the most popular Ideal boilers and how you can find out how old they are.

Ideal Logic: if you have an Ideal Logic boiler and you want to find out how old it is, you should look at the final 6 digits of the serial number. Ideal Logic boilers that were manufactured before 2015 read YY/MM/DD, while those that were manufactured from 2015 onwards read DD/MM/YY.

Ideal Classic: if you want to know how old your Ideal Classic boiler is, you need to look at the third group of numbers on the serial code. There should be four numbers in this section - the first two indicate the year, while the second two indicate the week. For example, ‘0815’ would be the 15th week of 2008.

Ideal Mini: if you want to know how old your Ideal Mini boiler is, you can find this information on the serial number. However, it is worth noting that Ideal Mini boilers have shorter serial numbers than most other boilers.

You want to pay attention to the final 4 numbers as these reveal the year of manufacture. Take ‘0509’ as an example. The ‘05’ is the 5th month of the year and ‘09’ is the year. This means that, according to the example above, the boiler was manufactured in May 2009.

Search the Industry Database

If you have a different boiler model to those listed above and you want to find out its age, you can visit the industry PCDB database. You will need to know the type of boiler you have, the brand name, model qualifier, fuel type, and model name. All of this information should be available to you in your boiler installation manual.

By searching the industry database, you can find out the age of your boiler, when it was first manufactured, and even the final year of manufacture if the boiler is no longer available.

Call Your Boiler Manufacturer

If none of the above has worked for you, the final option is to call your boiler’s manufacturer. They will be able to tell you the age of your boiler by checking their records. They might even be able to tell you when your boiler was installed.

Book a Boiler Replacement

If your boiler is over 15 years old, it is time to replace your boiler. You may not think this is necessary, especially if your boiler is still performing well. However, the older your boiler is, the less efficiently it works and the more you could be spending on your energy bills.
